Dionex offers industry-leading technology with Accelerated Solvent Extraction (ASE®) for fast, accurate sample preparation of air filters, soils, solids, and wastes. Coupled with rapid solvent reduction systems, the often labor-intensive steps of sample preparation can be automated in your laboratory. Extraction of contaminants from solid matrices like soil, sediments, and sludge can be a difficult process, often taking up to eight hours or more. Extractions that normally take hours can be performed in minutes using Accelerated Solvent Extraction (ASE) systems with pH-hardened pathways using Dionium components. Compared to techniques like Soxhlet and sonication, ASE generates results in a fraction of the time.

The steps involved in sample preparation can now be automated with ASE flow-through technology. Filtration and cleanup of solid samples can be achieved as part of the solvent extraction process in a single step. ASE offers a lower cost per sample than other techniques, reducing solvent consumption by up to 90%.

ASE is a patented technique for the extraction of solid and semisolid sample matrices using common solvents at elevated temperatures and pressures. ASE systems are available in both the entry-level ASE 150 system, and fully automated ASE 350.

For extraction of environmental samples, ASE has been proven to be applicable to a wide variety of contaminants:

ASE meets all of the requirements for extraction under U.S. EPA SW-846 Method 6860 Method 3545A for Pressurized Fluid Extraction, and is accepted under CLP SOW OLMO4.2.


Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are purely synthetic compounds that belong to a family of organic compounds known as chlorinated hydrocarbons. PCBs do not readily break down when exposed to heat or chemical treatment.


Dionex developed ASE® technology to facilitate the extraction of TPH and BTEX from a variety of matrices using a fraction of the time, solvent, and cost of traditional Soxhlet extraction.
