Ion-exchange chromatographic determination of dissolved alkali and alkaline earth metals and ammonia in drinking water is a key Dionex application. Drinking water is frequently monitored for the presence of sodium under the U.S. EPA Safe Drinking Water Act. Ammonium is commonly a required target analyte for wastewater discharge permits, and is monitored in process wastewaters.

ASTM Method D6919-03 is a reference method approved for use by the U.S. EPA for such analyses. Method D6919 separations can be performed by either suppressed conductivity IC using the IonPac CS16 column, as shown in the figure below, or by nonsuppressed IC using the IonPac SCS 1 column.
