Chromeleon News: Important Advisory Concerning Microsoft Internet Explorer 7

Posted 21 December 2006; updated 22 February 2007

On October 18th, 2006, Microsoft released Internet Explorer® 7 for Windows XP (IE7), a new version of the Internet browser that implements new security measures. The new security measures have created compatibility issues with many applications, including ones that do not even interact with Internet browsers.

A problem encountered by several application providers is that IE7 installs a version of a system file called IERNONCE.DLL that prevents certain post-reboot setup tasks from being automatically executed. This problem has been observed with Chromeleon, whose setup completion tasks include writing of some important entries to the Windows Registry and execution of an Installation Qualification (IQ). On computers with IE7 installed, these post-reboot tasks are scheduled but do not actually get executed, so the registry entries do not get made and the IQ does not get run automatically. (If an IQ report is then run manually, it reports errors with registry entries.)

Microsoft has released a security update for IE7 that fixes the above problem; the specific fix is described at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927357. Full details of Security Update 928090 for IE7 are available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928090.

Before attempting to install Chromeleon on a computer with Windows XP that has IE7 installed, make sure that the Security Update is installed. To check if the Security Update has already been installed, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Add/Remove Programs dialog (Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs).
  2. Enable the Show Updates check box at the top of the dialog.
  3. Look in the list for “Windows Internet Explorer 7 – Software Updates / Security Update for Windows Internet Explorer 7 (KB 928090)”.

If the above Security Update is not listed, you need to install it. Visit the Microsoft Windows Update web page at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to install the security update.

(If the computer you need to update does not have internet connectivity, you can use another computer to visit http://www.microsoft.com/downloads, search for “KB928090”, and download the update package IE7-KB928090-WindowsXP-x86-enu.exe . To e-mail this package between computers, you will probably need to temporarily rename its extension, because many e-mail systems block attachments that have the .EXE extension.)
