High Resolution HPLC of Aldehyde and Ketone Contaminants

The Thermo Scientific Acclaim* Carbonyl C18 HPLC columns are designed specifically for superior resolution and high-throughput separation for DNPH derivatives of aldehydes and ketones regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in methods such as EPA 554, EPA 8315, EPA 1667, EPA TO-11, and by the California Environmental Protection Agency Air Resources Board in method CARB 1004.

Carbonyl compounds, including low molecular weight aldehydes and ketones, cause environmental and health concerns. Because of their highly volatile and reactive nature, carbonyl compounds are often converted to the dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) derivatives prior to analysis. The Acclaim Carbonyl C18 columns are high-performance reversed-phase columns specifically designed for high throughput and baseline separation of thirteen DNPH derivatives of aldehydes and ketones regulated by CARB Method 1004. In addition, the same chromatographic method can be applied directly to other regulatory methods such as EPA 554, EPA 8315, and EPA TO-11.

The columns are available in three particle sizes:  2.2, 3 and 5µm. Smaller particle sizes provide high peak efficiency for fast analysis. Small internal diameter (i.d.) columns (e.g., 2.1 and 3.0 mm) consume less solvents and produce less chemical waste. For high-throughput application, the 2.1 × 100 mm column format combined with high linear velocity should be considered. When high resolution power is desired, a longer column (2.1 × 150 mm) can be used at an optimal linear velocity to achieve even better resolution.
